Artist Returns to Exhibit After Nine-Year Absence

Suk Tai has returned to Malaysia to hold her third solo exhibition in Kuala Lumpur. She brings with her works created and refined in four countries on three continents over the past nine years. "This show is smaller than my two previous shows" says the artist. "My style has evolved to become more detailed and considered, so each work takes me a lot longer to complete. However my basic themes are still the same"

Her themes revolve around love, compassion, tenderness and innocence. She sees her works as a visual diary, a way of recording memories, thoughts and emotions. Much of her current inspiration comes from her two-year-old daughter, Eve. "She is portrayed as a bold, unpretentious, curious, innocent figure in my work" says Suk. "She has shown me a way of life which is completely new to me. A life that is non-materialistic, unhurried, involving only the basic requirements, lots of patience and unconditional love - the only way of living that she knows."

Suk is currently based in New Zealand, where she lives with Eve and her husband Peter. She has been based in New Zealand for the past three years, and before that lived in France, England and Malaysia. "Having lived in so many places has influenced the way I paint to a certain degree, but I am still most strongly influenced by Malaysia and it's people. Being brought up in a country that has such diversity and richness makes it natural for me to choose warm, rich colours and subjects that are reminiscent of Malaysia"

The show includes about 30 works, including oil paintings and watercolours from 1997 to 2005. The show is at Yan Fine Art Gallery, City Square Centre in Kuala Lumpur and runs from 1 October to 31 October.
