BlissMini Exhibition by Suk TaiArtist StatementMy preferred subject matter has always been women and children because I am the most familiar with them from having been through the transition myself, from girl to woman to mother. It makes me want to paint the experience, because I'm still juggling between being a daughter to my mother and a mother to my daughter. My themes have always revolved around childhood, dreams, people I know, hope, daily routines, human issues, culture, friendship, sadness and love. I've been using oils throughout my career, it's a medium that I find gives vibrant colours and life without being artificial or plastic. I prefer the technique called scribble, using it I'm able to build the layering of colours to a depth that I prefer. I begin painting by sketching the outline directly onto a blank canvas using black paint. The colours are selected by “feeling” at the time of painting. I know a piece is done when I feel content, with a sense of fulfilment. Sometimes I will leave a painting for several months and come back to it with fresh eyes. My current works are inspired by my daughter and being a mother. I'm exploring the sentimental side of being a mother and daughter at the same time, and to celebrate children for providing their parents with so much joy and unconditional love.
